| Thallus crustose, superficial, continuous, rimose to areolate, pale fawn to ochre-brown, to 3 cm wide, 0.05–0.13 mm thick. Areolae angular, irregular or rounded, 0.3–1.0 mm wide, plane and smooth, lacking isidia and soredia. Prothallus not apparent. Apothecia common, dispersed, sessile, 0.8–1.6 mm wide; disc ±plane, undulate or weakly concave, round, dull black, epruinose; thalline exciple prominent, persistent, smooth, crenulate, 0.10–0.25 mm wide; proper exciple poorly defined. Epihymenium violet-brown to black, 10–15 µm thick. Hymenium violet-brown to red-brown, 25–40 µm thick. Hypothecium yellow to yellow-brown, 40–50 µm thick. Ascospores simple, broadly ellipsoidal, 7.5–8.0 × 5.0–6.5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex K+ yellow, C–, KC–, P+ pale yellow; medulla KC+ pink, P–, UV+ blue-white; containing atranorin (minor), physodic acid (major). |
